How come the tram tracks didn't buckle in the extreme heat in Melbourne?

The metal is exactly the same. They are buried in the ground and retain coolness from the earth and concrete surrounding them, this also gives the reinforcement. But the railway tracks, "float" on sleepers and are subject to movement and extream heat.
