Digital camera and face close ups?

I have some canon 4mp digital camera and a cell phone with dig camera. When shooting face closeups pics seem weird, they look somehow "distorted", one's head projection doesnt look the same as when looking into a mirror. Do I need some special flash or lens, or...? Thanks.
